He received his medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 1989, and completed a general rotating internship at Lakeside Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He was chief resident at the University of Kansas School of Medicine Family Practice Residency, and Board Certified in Family Practice. His medical practice background is procedure intensive and includes the management of critical care patients, assisting with surgeries, obstetrics, emergency and urgent care medicine.
